Landfill leachate is a very offensive liquid produced by the solid waste disposal in an aerobic environment. It is well known as one of the most serious environmental problems due to the high concentrations of refractory organic matters and inorganic toxic compounds. The contaminated water may contain suspended solids, soluble nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus), heavy metals (including mercury, cadmium, lead, chromium, copper), pathogens, helminthes and many toxic chemicals. Due to complex chemical composition of landfill leachate, the treatment of leachate is the most important concern for solid waste management. 

Nowadays electrochemical processes (EPs) present a way to treat leachate in an effective, relatively safe, and economically feasible manner. A sequence of processes are designed: electro-coagulation (EC), electro-oxidation (EO) and sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation process (SR-AOP). Obviously, employing different types of anode materials plays a dominant role, and substantially influences both reaction selectivity and efficiency. Our lead dioxide coated titanium anode is found to have an excellent removal performance for chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonia (NH3-N), color and heavy metals, especially in EO process.
